Scooters - Care & Maintenance

Please select from the following Care and Maintenance headings:

1. How do I care for my batteries:

Here are a few basic rules to help you keep your batteries in tip-top condition:

  • Keep your batteries fully charged – a fully charged up battery runs very efficiently by releasing a small amount of power known as a "trickle charge". Every time you get back from a trip out put your scooter on charge, even if you have only nipped down to the corner shop.
  • Keep your batteries clean – if you go out in the mud and rain wipe them down with a dry cloth before you put your scooter away, also try and make sure the terminals are greased.
  • Keep your batteries cool – don't store them near fires or radiators. This could be dangerous and impair the performance of your batteries.

If these simple rules are followed, you should increase the lifetime of your batteries.

2. How to clean a mobility scooter:

Customers often ask how to clean a mobility scooter. If your mobility scooter is muddy then we recommend lightly spraying the shrouds (covers) with a mixture of fairy liquid and water, lightly scrubbing any dirt with a soft bristled brush. The scooter can then be dried with a cloth. For a true factory finish spray any shrouds with back to black or similar car body work restorer.
Dusting and cleaning will keep your scooter looking good and running efficiently.

  • Dust all exposed parts, using a soft, smooth, dry cloth.
  • Clean with a cloth dampened with liquid detergent or glass cleaner.
  • Wipe down the scooter seat with soft disinfectant wipes.
  • Avoid getting electrical components wet. Gently dust instead.
  • Do not spray water or liquid cleaners directly onto the scooter.
  • Do not use wax, oil or harsh cleansers.
  • When done, wipe the mobility scooter gently until it's dry.
  • Drape a scooter cover over your vehicle to protect against dust build-up.

3. How to inspect and maintain your mobility scooter:

In between professional inspections, give your scooter regular check-ups.

  • Check tire treads daily for wear. Replace thinning tires.
  • Check the upholstery for areas that may irritate your skin.
  • Check battery power. If the gauge is in RED, re-charge or replace batteries.
  • Adjust moveable parts (steering tiller, wheels, swivel seat, levers, mirror, etc) to ensure consistent functioning.

4. Wet weather and mobility scooters:

If you have been caught out in the rain on your mobility scooter we recommend drying the scooter out as soon as possible paying particular attention to the top of the tiller (where the controls are). This is the most important part of a mobility scooter.[
